Northwestern Falls 12-4 to Texas State on Opening Day

SAN MARCOS, Texas --Though they had plenty of opportunities, Northwestern struggled to cash them in, leaving 11 Wildcats on base in a 12-4 setback at the hands of the Texas State Bobcats on Friday.
Michael Farinelli (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (0-1). Ryan Keenan was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.
Offensively, the Wildcats were led by Cooper Foard, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a walk and two RBI. Senior Stephen Hrustich put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with two walks. Junior Vincent Bianchina also chipped in for Northwestern, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bobcats struck first in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run from Ryan Leary. They added on another run on a sacrifice fly in the second, then two more each in the fourth and sixth innings to make it a 7-0 game. Texas State widened the gap with a five-run seventh inning to increase their lead to 12-0.
The Wildcats finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Northwestern scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Foard.
The Wildcats kept the Bobcats scoreless from there while adding on another run themselves. The 'Cats scored their final run of the game on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Bennett Markinson before Texas State closed out the ninth, bringing the game to its final score of 12-4.
