Arnone Hits First Wildcat HR in Loss to Texas State

2/18/2023 6:17:00 PM | Baseball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Griffin Arnone's three RBI were not enough for Northwestern on Saturday. The Wildcats put up five runs, but could not limit Texas State offensively, and fell 20-5.

Junior Matt McClure (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (0-2).

Griffin Arnone led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run, his first in a Northwestern uniform. Junior Vincent Bianchina compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. Kevin Ferrer also chipped in, going 1-for-4 for Northwestern with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Northwestern got an RBI single from Arnone, scoring Cooper Foard from second base.

The Bobcats then rallied to score six runs and take a 6-1 lead before the Wildcats got back on the board in the sixth. Bianchina came across to score the lone run of the inning for Northwestern, which tightened the Bobcats lead to 6-2.

Texas State expanded their lead to 13-2 before the Northwestern offense got going, reducing that lead to 13-4 in the seventh. The Wildcats added two to their tally on Arnone's two-run homer to left.

The Bobcats expanded their lead to 17-4 before the Northwestern offense got back to work, biting into that lead in the eighth. The Wildcats scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Ferrer, bringing the score to 17-5 in favor of Texas State. The Wildcats were unable to get any closer, as Texas State added three runs to their tally on the way to a 20-5 final.
