Seventh-Inning Rally Lifts 'Cats in Season-Opener

CLEARWATHER, Fla. – Northwestern rallied from down 5-4 in the sixth inning to win in dramatic fashion, tallying four runs in the seventh to earn an 8-5 victory over South Alabama in Friday's season opener.

 Cami Henry (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Northwestern (1-0) in her Division I debut. The transfer from DePauw went 1.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Lauren Boyd also made an impact in the circle for the Wildcats, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout en route to a save.

Jordyn Rudd led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI. Hannah Cady provided a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Maeve Nelson also chipped in, going 1-for-2 for Northwestern with a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Northwestern's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run triple off the bat of Rudd.

After losing the lead they built in the fifth inning, Northwestern's offense exploded for four runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run go-ahead double off the bat of Cady, which brought the score to 8-5 in favor of the Wildcats. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as Northwestern held on for the win.
