'Cats Open Big Ten Play on the Road at Maryland
12/9/2023 5:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern women's basketball will open Big Ten play on the road Sunday as they take on the Maryland Terrapins in College Park. Action from the Xfinity Center is set to tip off at noon CT.
Northwestern (3-5) enters the matchup hoping to bounce back from a four-game losing streak. They'll face off with a 6-3 Maryland team that has won each of their last four and leads the all-time series against the 'Cats 13-1.
During their most recent stretch, the 'Cats have continued to get production from junior Hailey Weaver. At 12.9 points per game, she is the team's leading scorer and has reached double digits in seven of eight games for the Wildcats so far. Along with her, Caileigh Walsh and Melannie Daley have continued to chip in and enter Sunday's matchup averaging 11.9 points per game each.
Last time out against Georgetown, Maggie Pina set a new season mark with nine points - her most as a Wildcat - on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arch. At 47.4 percent from three, Pina is now the 'Cats' best three-point shooter this season (min. ten attempts). She sits just 26 points shy of the 1,000-point career mark.
After Sunday's game, Northwestern will close out its non-conference schedule with three games against non-conference foes over the next two weeks before they resume Big Ten play for good on December 30. That portion of the schedule continues on the road - but much closer to home - with the 'Cats set to take on DePaul on Wednesday. Tip-off from Wintrust Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
