Northwestern Falls 71-58 to Maryland in B1G Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench, but fell 71-58 to the Maryland Terrapins on the road Sunday.

The Wildcats (3-6, 0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Melannie Daley, who had 14 points. Casey Harter added 10 points and Caroline Lau added four points, six assists and two steals.

Daley pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 14 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

The Northwestern defense held Maryland shooters to only 39.4 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-4, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run with 4:38 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Daley, to tie the game at 10. Maryland then pulled ahead, sending the Wildcats into the second quarter down 22-14.

Northwestern then cut the Terrapins lead to 27-20 before going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Harter, to tie the game at 27. The teams went back and forth for the remained of the half, and the 'Cats entered the break down by only three, 36-33.

Maryland started the second half ready, however, and the Wildcats couldn't keep pace. They faced a 56-39 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Maryland kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 71-52 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Alana Goodchild's three, to shrink the deficit to 71-58 with 13 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Northwestern fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
