EVANSTON, Ill. – Ranked in the Top 25 by the Associated Press in the latest poll and for the second time in the last two seasons, No. 25 Northwestern closes out its season-long four-game homestand against local foe Chicago State at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Jason Ross Jr. (play-by-play) and Trent Meacham (analyst) have the call on BTN, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will have the radio call on AM 720 WGN and SiriusXM Channel 372.
Northwestern's 7-1 start is its best through eight games since 2015-16 (7-1). The 2015-16 team began the season 13-1, the school's best start since 1930-31 (16-1).
Last time out, Northwestern raced past Detroit Mercy 91-59 on Sunday, Dec. 10 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Sophomore guard Nick Martinelli posted a career-high 22 points off the bench to lead all Wildcats. Martinelli's 22 points are the most by a Northwestern bench player since Boo Buie scored 26 against Michigan State on Dec. 18, 2019.
NU dished out 29 assists on 34 made baskets, the sixth-most in a game in program history and most since Jan. 15, 2017 (29) against Iowa.
Ty Berry recorded 16 points, marking his fifth-consecutive game scoring in double figures, tying a career-long streak. Over his last five games, Berry is averaging 15.6 points and 2.4 steals, and totaled 14 made 3-pointers.
Buie is averaging 18.4 points per game (sixth in the Big Ten), 4.8 assists per game (fourth in the Big Ten), and 1.5 steals per game (eighth in the Big Ten). He is one of just five players nationally and the only high-major player to post 18.0-plus points, 4.5-plus assists, and 1.5-plus steals per game this season.
The Wildcats are searching for their first win as a ranked team inside Welsh-Ryan Arena since the No. 6-ranked 'Cats defeated Iowa 80-77 on Jan. 3, 1959. Under Head Coach Chris Collins, Northwestern has been ranked six times, the second-most times NU has been ranked under a head coach (Bill Rohr - 7).
The Wildcats lead the all-time series with Chicago State 15-0. Collins is 6-0 in his career against the Cougars, including last season's 85-54 season-opening victory, where Buie posted 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Northwestern's 15-game win-streak against the Cougars is the program second-longest against a single opponent (Chicago, 17).
Chicago State, the nation's only Division I Independent, is 3-9 on the season and led offensively by Wesley Cardet Jr., who averages 17.3 points and 2.4 assists per game.
Northwestern hits the road on Saturday, Dec. 16, for a short trip to take on DePaul. Tip-off from Wintrust Arena is set for 4:30 p.m. CT, with the game airing on FS1 and WGN Radio 720.
