Wrestling Central: ‘Cats Head To Las Vegas For Stacked CKLV Invitational

Northwestern to begin action at event on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT)
EVANSTON, Ill. (November 30, 2023) – Northwestern wrestling continues the early portion of its 2023-24 schedule this weekend, jetting west for the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas (CKLV) Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
Action inside the Paradise Event Center at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino will begin at 11 a.m. (CT) on Friday morning. Friday's evening session is set for 8 p.m. (CT), while Saturday's slate kicks off at 12 p.m. (CT). First and third-place bouts will feature as part of the event's final session, which is scheduled to get underway a 5 p.m. (CT) on Saturday evening.
The CKLV Invitational features a loaded field, highlighted by 16 teams ranked in the latest FloWrestling NCAA Division I Rankings. Northwestern, which sits at No. 33 in the poll, will have the opportunity to see how it stacks up against a host of Big Ten Conference foes, with No. 4 Michigan, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 22 Purdue, and No. 29 Maryland all slated to be in attendance.
Head Coach Matt Storniolo's lineup for the two-day event features a pair of podium finishers from last year's edition of the event, both of whom will be making their respective 2023-24 debuts. Trevor Chumbley (157 lbs), a fifth-place finisher last season, looks to build off an impressive redshirt junior campaign in which he posted 27-9 overall record, placed fourth in the Big Ten, and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career. Troy Fisher (184 lbs), who also checked in fifth last season at 174 pounds, made his second straight trip to the national meet last season en route to finishing 20-8.
Chumbley (No. 7) and Fisher (No. 9) are part of quartet of 'Cats to be pre-seeded for the CKLV Invitational, a group that also includes No. 7 Maxx Mayfield (165 lbs) and No. 11 Evan Bates (197 lbs).
