Wildcats Visit Iowa For Sunday Matinee

Northwestern seeks fifth straight win over Hawkeyes

EVANSTON, Ill. (November 11, 2023) – Coming off a spirited showing against No. 1 Nebraska earlier in the week, Northwestern (11-14, 5-10 B1G) continues a four-match road trip on Sunday afternoon against Iowa.  First serve from inside the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Northwestern dealt No. 1 Nebraska just its sixth set loss at home this season, turning in a valiant effort in a 3-1 setback this past Wednesday at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
 
Julia Sangiacomo led the 'Cats with 16 kills, her 16th outing this season with 10-plus kills. Averie Hernandez reached double figures in kills for the 11th time in 13 matches, posting 13 kills. Defensively, Leilani Dodson piled up six blocks to go along with seven kills, while Alexa Rousseau notched her 11th double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs.
 
SCOUTING IOWA
Iowa (8-19, 0-15 B1G) enters Sunday's matchup still in search of its first Big Ten win of 2023.  The Hawkeyes dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Illinois on Friday evening.
 
Under the leadership of second-year head coach Jim Barnes, Iowa is paced offensively by Caitlan Buettner (3.06 k/s) and Nataly Moravec (2.62 k/s). Michelle Urquhart has been impressive from the service line, averaging 0.46 service aces per set, a mark that ranks second in the Big Ten.
 
SERIES STUFF
Northwestern has won four straight over Iowa to extend its lead in the all-time series to 47-34-1 (.579) across 82 matchups. 
 
In the lone meeting between the 'Cats and Hawkeyes last season at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Dodson tallied eight kills as Northwestern stormed to a three-set sweep of Iowa inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on October 30, 2022. The Wildcats hit .365 (53-11-115) in the win, highlighted by a .529 clip (20-2-34) in the second set.
 
UP NEXT
Northwestern is back out on the road next weekend for matchups against Rutgers (November 17) and No. 19 Penn State (November 18).
