Four place inside top 20 on individual leaderboard for Northwestern
MEDINAH, Ill. (October 10, 2023) – Dianna Lee and Lauryn Nguyen both earned top-10 finishes, leading a quartet of Wildcats to place in the top 20, as the Northwestern University women's golf team placed third at the Illini Women's Invitational in Medinah, Ill.
In a field featuring six teams ranked inside the top 30 of the latest Golfweek Women's Team Collegiate Rankings, the Wildcats posted a 54-hole team score of 850 (291-277-282) to best No. 11 San Jose State (288-286-280=854) by four strokes for third place. LSU (275-287-275=837) laid claim to the team title, while the Tigers' Latanna Stone (69-70-68=207) topped the individual leaderboard.
Lee turned in a balanced effort over the course of the last two days at the prestigious Medinah Country Club (par 72; 6,166 yards), opening play with a one-under-par 71 before back-to-back two-under-par 70s that saw her climb into a tie for sixth place with a five-under-par 211 (71-70-70). Nguyen was hot on her heels, finishing a stroke back as part of a tie for ninth at 212 (73-69-70), a total bolstered by a three-under-par 69, Nguyen's third round in the 60s this season.
The pairing of Ashley Yun and Jennifer Cai both battled their way inside the top 20, each concluding play with one-under-par 215s to earn a share of 19th place. Yun (76-68-71) fired the top round of the week for Northwestern, and low round of her young collegiate career, during second-round play, racking up six birdies on her way to a four-under-par 68. Cai also turned in her low 18-hole effort during Monday's second round, turning in a two-under-par 70.
Jieni Li used consecutive even-par rounds of 72 over her final 36 holes of play to finish tied for 27th at 217 (73-72-72). Competing as an individual, Jiayi Wang impressed, using a career-low one-under-par 71 as part of a 220 (76-71-73) en route to sharing 42nd.
