Northwestern claims titles in four events

EVANSTON, Ill. (October 17, 2023) – Four Wildcats took home event titles, highlighting a group of 18 podium finishers, as the Northwestern University women's fencing team opened its 2023-24 slate over the weekend by hosting the Remenyik ROC/RJCC inside Ryan Fieldhouse.

The 'Cats got off to a fast start in the junior women's sabre on Saturday, claiming the top three spots on the podium.  Megumi Oishi led the way, going a perfect 6-0 in pool action before completing an unblemished run through the tableau to finish first overall.  Adele Bois and Amy Lu placed second and third, respectively, in their first action for Northwestern.

Yejine Lee kept momentum rolling in the Division I women's foil, also going undefeated in pool play on her way to a first-place finish.  Lee matched up against teammate Rowan Park in the event final, with Park taking second following a razor-thin 8-7 win by Lee.  Karina Vasile (7th) and Samantha Serban (8th) also battled to spots on the podium.

Karen Wang completed a clean sweep on Saturday for the Wildcats in the junior women's epee, cruising in pool action before surging through the tableau, a run that was capped off by a 15-6 win in the final.  Christina Liu joined Wang on the podium, securing a sixth-place finish.

Juliana Hung got the 'Cats off and running on Sunday in the junior women's foil.  Hung breezed through pool play, going a spotless 6-0, on her way to a fifth-place finish.

As was the case on Saturday, Northwestern's sabre squad enjoyed a standout showing on Sunday, putting four on the podium in the Division I section of the event.  Alex Chen, who made her Wildcat debut in Saturday's junior section, did not drop a bout as she claimed the event title.  Chen bested Kailing Sathyanath, who took second, by a 15-10 margin in the final of the tableau, while Oishi and Levi Hoogendoorn shared third place.

Northwestern wrapped up its stay at home by placing four fencers on the podium in the Division I women's epee.  Anna Damratoski and Hanna Lipthay led the attack, placing second and third, respectively.  Athina Kwon (7th) and Liu (8th) rounded out a quartet of Wildcats inside the top eight.
