Northwestern back in action at October NAC, October 27-30
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (October 24, 2023) – Sky Miller, Rowan Park, and Athina Kwon led a contingent of seven Wildcats to post podium finishes as the Northwestern University women's fencing team competed at the Penn State Open in University Park, Pa. over the weekend.
Miller, a three-time NCAA qualifier who made her season debut, rolled through pool action in the women's sabre to the tune of a 5-1 record before entering the tableau, where she picked up three wins before medically withdrawing in the event final, placing second overall. She was joined on the podium by Kailing Sathyanath, who took fifth to notch her second podium finish in as many events to open the 2023-24 season.
Like Sathyanath, Park returned to the podium for the second time in as many weeks, claiming third in the women's foil. Park enjoyed an unblemished run through pool bouts, going a spotless 5-0, before scoring a pair of wins in the tableau. A week removed from a fifth-place finish in the junior section of the event at the Remenyik ROC/RJCC, Juliana Hung continued the strong start to her season, battling to a seventh-place finish.
In the women's epee, Kwon spearheaded the attack, knocking off two higher-seeded opponents in the tableau on her way to a third-place showing that marked her second consecutive podium finish. Karen Wang breezed to a 5-0 showing in pool play en route to checking in fifth overall.
