EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 1 Northwestern field hockey (13-1) knocked off Ohio (5-7) and picked up its 13th straight win with a 5-0 victory on senior day Sunday at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats kicked off their offense near the end of the first quarter, with Peyton Halsey netting her team-leading tenth goal of the season on an assist from Lindsey Frank. Olivia Bent-Cole added on before the end of the half with an unassisted goal on a penalty corner in the second quarter, making it 2-0 Northwestern.
In the second half, the 'Cats continued to impress, especially on corner opportunities. Beginning with Bent-Cole's goal before half, the 'Cats converted on four straight penalty corners. Ilse Tromp scored with help from Halsey and Alia Marshall, then Bent-Cole scored her second goal of the day on an assist from Tromp just before the end of the third quarter. Lauren Wadas capped off the senior day victory with a final goal in the fourth quarter, securing the final score of 5-0.
The shutout was the 'Cats' tenth of the season and their fifth straight. The current streak is the sixth string of five or more shutouts in program history and the first since 1991. As a team, the 'Cats have allowed just 0.50 goals per game, which ranks first in the country.
Officially done with non-conference play for the regular season, Northwestern will turn its attention to their final trio of Big Ten opponents, beginning with No. 15 Penn State and No. 4 Rutgers on the road next weekend.
