Northwestern racks up eight wins in first victory over Scarlet Knights in program history

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 29, 2023) – Lucas Davison and Yahya Thomas picked up bonus point victories as No. 14 Northwestern wrestling (5-2, 4-2 B1G) completed a weekend sweep in a 28-6 rout of Rutgers (9-5, 1-4 B1G) this afternoon at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, N.J.

The 'Cats picked up wins in eight of the day's 10 bouts en route to the program's first dual meet win over the Scarlet Knights.

Davison jumped all over Rutgers' Kyle Epperly at heavyweight, taking a 2-0 first-period lead.  Following a four-point near fall in the opening minute of the second period, the Chesterton, Ind. product locked up Epperly for the fall at 3:44 to secure a fourth straight win.  Davison is now 5-1 this season in Big Ten dual action.

Wrestling at 149 pounds, Thomas protected his undefeated Big Ten record in a 12-4 major decision win over Tony White.  Thomas racked up five takedowns and piled up over two minutes of riding time to improve to 17-1 overall.

Maxx Mayfield and Troy Fisher posted consecutive comeback victories for the Wildcats at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively.  With riding time a factor, Mayfield found himself in a 3-3 deadlock with Robert Kanniard.  Mayfield notched a takedown ahead of a four-point near fall inside the final 10 seconds, surging in front on his way to a 9-4 win.  Not to be outdone, Fisher roared back from an early 6-0 hole against Jackson Turley, taking down Turley three times in the closing frame to rally for an 11-10 victory.

Chris Cannon (133 pounds) and Frankie Tal-Shahar (141 pounds) closed out perfect weekends, each registering wins by decision.  Competing just over 30 miles away from his hometown of Oceanport, N.J., Cannon created separation during the third period against Joe Heilmann, using a takedown and riding time point to wrap up a 7-3 triumph.  Tal-Shahar found himself in a battle with Joseph Olivieri, sewing up a 5-3 win with a third-period takedown of his own.

Michael DeAugustino got the 'Cats off to a fast start at 125 pounds, dispatching Dean Peterson, 3-2.  DeAugustino jumped out to an early lead before fighting off a late takedown attempt from Peterson as he put Northwestern on the board with his second win across his last three appearances.

Returning to the lineup at 157 pounds, Trevor Chumbley also hit the accelerator early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period ahead of a second-period reversal that extended his lead over Andrew Clark to 5-0.  Clark looked to engineer a comeback in the third period, but Chumbley's early lead proved too much in a 5-3 victory that pushed the redshirt junior's conference mark to 3-2.

Northwestern looks to close out a perfect home dual schedule at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday, February 5 when it hosts No. 6 Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
