Buckeyes take dual meet, 21-12
EVANSTON, Ill. (February 5, 2023) – Lucas Davison won by fall for the second time in as many bouts, highlighting a trio of wins for No. 13 Northwestern wrestling (5-3, 4-3 B1G) this afternoon in a 21-12 setback against No. 4 Ohio State (12-2, 6-1 B1G) in the Wildcats' 2022-23 home finale inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Davison, who entered the day on a four-match win streak at 285 pounds, found himself in a defensive battle with Tate Orndorff nearing the midway point of the third period. The Chesterton, Ind. native put away any hope the Buckeye had of an upset, planting Orndorff on his back with just under a minute remaining en route to his second pinfall victory in as many outings.
Michael DeAugustino closed out the afternoon with a top-10 triumph in a 125-pound battle against Malik Heinselman. A winner in three of his last four matches, DeAugustino took a lead he would not relinquish late in the first period, taking down Heinselman on the edge of the mat to go in front. DeAugustino went on to rack up nearly 90 seconds of riding time to close out a 4-1 victory.
Both Davison and DeAugustino were among nine Wildcats honored in a pre-dual ceremony on Senior Day.
Frankie Tal-Shahar continued to build momentum at 141 pounds, notching a 3-2 decision win over Dylan D'Emilio. Tal-Shahar, who registered a key third-period takedown that ultimately propelled him to victory, has won each of his last three bouts.
Ohio State picked up a handful of narrow wins on the afternoon, with Jesse Mendez (133 pounds) winning in sudden victory, while Sammy Sasso (149 pounds) and Paddy Gallagher (157 pounds) both eked out victories during tiebreaker periods.
Northwestern wraps up the regular season on the road next weekend, with visits to Northern Illinois (February 10) and Purdue (February 12) on the docket. Sunday's matchup with the Boilermakers will be televised on Big Ten Network.
