‘Cats extend home win streak to six
EVANSTON, Ill. (January 27, 2023) – For the second time in as many weeks, No. 14 Northwestern (4-2, 3-2 B1G) left it until the final bout of the night, with Lucas Davison's decision victory providing the winning margin for the 'Cats in an 18-17 triumph over No. 13 Wisconsin (7-6, 1-5 B1G) this evening inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Tonight's result sees the Wildcats push their win streak in home dual matches to six, a run that dates back to a 29-7 win against Maryland back on February 6, 2022.
Davison, who is ranked fourth by FloWrestling at 285 pounds and entered the night with a record of 3-1 in Big Ten duals this season, went into his matchup with No. 10 Trent Hillger knowing that a victory would propel the 'Cats to a second win in as many duals. He jumped in front, 2-0, with a minute remaining in the first period, securing a takedown following a wild scramble on the edge of the mat. After padding his lead with a second period escape, Davison rode out Hillger during the third period, amassing well over two minutes of riding time en route to a 4-1 win.
Making his return to the lineup at 174 pounds, No. 19 Troy Fisher wasted no time getting back in the win column against Josh Otto. Fisher, who had not seen action since the Midlands Championships in late December, overpowered Otto in the middle stages of the third period to go in front as he ultimately closed out a 4-2 decision.
Finding himself locked in a 1-1 tie in the third period at 133 pounds, No. 11 Chris Cannon came up with a takedown with just over a minute remaining to fend off Taylor Lamont in a 4-1 victory. Cannon is now 4-1 in Big Ten dual competition.
No. 13 Frankie Tal-Shahar snapped a brief three-match skid with a 3-2 win against Joseph Zargo at 133 pounds. Tal-Shahar made the most of a takedown with less than 10 seconds left in the first period, jumping in front, 2-0, on his way to a 3-2 decision win.
In a marquee showdown at 149 pounds, No. 4 Yahya Thomas and No. 2 Austin Gomez went back and forth during an action-packed opening period, before Gomez was forced to withdraw due to injury early in the second frame.
