Three ‘Cats Pick Up Wins In Matchup With No. 2 Iowa

Hawkeyes win dual, 27-9
IOWA CITY, Iowa (January 13, 2023) – No. 11 Northwestern wrestling (2-1, 1-1 B1G) picked up a trio of individual victories as the Wildcats dropped a 27-9 decision to No. 2 Iowa (10-0, 3-0 B1G) this evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
No. 11 Chris Cannon got the 'Cats off to a fast start before a raucous crowd. Wrestling in the evening's opening bout at 133 pounds, Cannon overpowered Cullan Schriever just before the midway point of the first period, registering a takedown that gave him a lead he would never relinquish as the redshirt junior accumulated 1:34 of riding time.
No. 4 Yahya Thomas and No. 8 Max Murin battled it out at 149 pounds. Thomas, who dropped a pair of tightly contested decision to Murin last season, broke through in hostile territory, coming up with a takedown in the closing seconds of third period to extend his win streak to 10 matches and push his record on the year to 13-1.
Andrew Davison got the Wildcats back in the scoring column at 197 pounds. After jumping out to an early lead over Zach Glazier courtesy of a first-period takedown, Davison found himself in a 5-5 deadlock with 90 seconds remaining in the third period before battling his way around Glazier to secure the deciding takedown.
In the night's feature bout at 285, No. 4 Lucas Davison and No. 3 Tony Cassioppi seemingly traded shots throughout all three periods. Staring at a 3-2 deficit with time winding down, Davison looked to be in prime position to go in front, but was unable to shake loose from Cassioppi to gain full control as the Hawkeye held on for a narrow victory.
Northwestern continues its road swing on Sunday, January 15 with a 2 p.m. matchup against No. 16 Nebraska at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
