Cannon, Thomas wrap up 2-0 weekends
LINCOLN, Neb. (January 15, 2023) – No. 4 Lucas Davison and Maxx Mayfield picked up standout wins as No. 11 Northwestern (2-2, 1-2 B1G) came up on the short end of a 22-15 defeat to No. 16 Nebraska (6-2, 2-0 B1G) this afternoon at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Appearing in the afternoon's final bout at 285 pounds, Davison closed out the meet on a high note for the 'Cats. Coming off a hard-fought defeat less than 48 hours earlier, Davison didn't need long to dispatch Cale Davidson, recording a fall just 43 seconds in. The victory, which sees Davison improve to 12-2 on the year, marks his third win by pinfall.
Competing in his hometown, Mayfield (165 pounds) found himself in a 1-1 deadlock with Bubba Wilson midway through the third period. The local product put his foot on the gas from that point forward, jumping on top, 3-1, with a takedown that preceded a four-point near fall to provide the exclamation point on a 7-2 win, moving Mayfield to 2-1 in conference action in 2023.
No. 11 Chris Cannon (133 pounds) and No. 4 Yahya Thomas (149 pounds) both extended the perfect starts to their Big Ten campaigns.
Cannon slowly distanced himself from Kyle Burwick, jumping out to a 2-0 advantage courtesy of a first-period takedown before riding out the Husker in the second period. He tacked on another takedown in the closing frame en route to a 6-1 win, his seventh victory across eight appearances.
Fresh off an emotionally charged win on Friday night, Thomas continued to be the model of consistency this afternoon, with his third-period takedown proving to be the difference in a 4-2 decision over Dayne Morton. Currently sitting at 14-1 on the year, Thomas has rattled off 11 straight wins.
Northwestern returns to the friendly confines of Welsh-Ryan Arena on Friday, January 20 at 7 p.m. to open a two-dual homestand against No. 25 Illinois on Alumni Night.
