Volleyball Notches 11 Blocks in Sweep Over UTEP

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern volleyball team totaled 11 blocks on the way to a three-set victory (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) against UTEP (1-1) Friday at home at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats won their first two matches of the season for the fourth time in the last five years. NU claimed its second sweep of the day, after downing Pacific in the morning match.
The Wildcats were led by a double-double from Temi Thomas-Ailara, who registered 10 kills and 11 digs on the day. Hanna Lesiak also added 11 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Megan Miller chipped in 10 digs to go with Desiree Becker's six blocks.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Wildcats endured a back-and-forth first set to win 27-25 in a stanza that featured two lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five UTEP attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | Northwestern continued to roll after a set-one win by earning a 25-21 victory in the second set. The Wildcats persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. Northwestern's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six UTEP attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 UTEP attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 3 | Northwestern then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Wildcats the set the third set 25-22. Northwestern took the lead for good at 11-10 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Wildcats took over the lead. The Northwestern offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Northwestern's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four UTEP attacks in the stanza.
