EVANSTON, IL - Labonita Ghose of women's swimming & diving and Sam Gerak of football were named recipients of the 2022 Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the conference announced Thursday afternoon.
Each year two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan on continuing their education are awarded the $7,500 scholarship based on their academic achievement throughout their undergraduate studies.
Ghose graduated from Northwestern with a degree in Neuroscience and minors in Global Health and Latin Classics. She is currently pursuing a masters in Public Health with a focus on Community Health Research at Northwestern.
The San Jose, California native represented the Wildcats at the 2022 Big Ten Championships after a standout Northwestern career that saw Ghose reach the conference meet in all three diving events during her time in Evanston. The Northwestern captain also brought home a host of medals diving for the Wildcats.
Gerak earned his Northwestern degree last year in Biological Sciences with a minor in Classical Studies, adding a post-baccalaureate degree in Specialized Studies.
A team captain in 2021, Gerak began the season on the Rimington Award Watch List after the Avon, Ohio native started every game at center for the Wildcats on their way to the Big Ten Championship Game and a Citrus Bowl win over Auburn in 2020.
