TEMPE, Ariz. - Northwestern staged a late comeback to force extra innings for the second-straight day, but fell to Arizona State 7-4 in game two of the Tempe Super Regional. With the series tied 1-1, the 'Cats and Sun Devils will face off in a winner-take-all game on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU with a trip to the Women's College World Series on the line.
After throwing a complete game in yesterday's 11-inning contest, Williams was strong yet again for Northwestern, allowing three earned runs in the first 4.2 innings of the game against a potent Arizona State offense. Williams reentered as the pitcher in extra innings, allowing one earned run in 0.2 innings of work.
Jordyn Rudd powered the Northwestern offense with a 3-for-4 day, including two doubles, a RBI and a run scored.
After a walk and hit by pitch, ASU got on the board first with a RBI-double. Angela Zedak threw out the potential second run at home plate with a strike from left field to keep the deficit at one.
Northwestern loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning after a Nikki Cuchran single and walks from Maeve Nelson and Angela Zedak. With two outs and the 'Cats yet to score, Grace Nieto beat out a ground ball to the pitcher to push across a run and tie the game.
Arizona State got runners on second and third with one out in the fourth inning, but Williams worked out of the jam to keep the score tied at one. The Sun Devils took the lead the next inning with a three-run homer to knock Williams out of the game.
Down three late in the game for the second-straight day, the resilient 'Cats refused to quit yet again. Jordyn Rudd doubled to drive in Rachel Lewis and immediately cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Ayana Lindsey pinch running for Rudd, Maeve Nelson drove her in with a RBI-single to pull the 'Cats within one.
With the game on the line, Lauren Dvorak held ASU scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to give the Wildcat offense a chance to fight back.
With the 'Cats down one with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jordyn Rudd kept NU alive with a single through the left side of the infield. Maeve Nelson tied the game a batter later with a ball high off the center field wall, inches away from a walk-off homer, to drive in Rudd from first. Arizona State scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
