Evanston, IL - Michael Farinelli pitched a complete game and Northwestern Baseball erupted with four home runs in an 11-1 victory over Purdue on Saturday.
Northwestern began the day two games behind Purdue for the final spot in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament with five conference games left to play in 2022. It was a must-win game for the Wildcats and Farinelli delivered with one of the best outings of his college career.
The graduate transfer from Middlebury eased through the Purdue lineup on 107 pitches, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to give him seven punch outs on the afternoon. Farinelli is now third in the Big Ten with 78.2 innings pitched in the 2022 season.
At the plate, Ethan O'Donnell made history in the bottom of the fifth inning, smoking a double of the season off the wall in right field. His 23rd two-bagger of the season gives O'Donnell the all-time Northwestern record for doubles in a season.
Anthony Calarco crushed a pair of home runs, his 10th and 11th of the season, to keep the Northwestern offense on schedule.
Defensively, O'Donnell made a fantastic diving catch in the third inning to save a run. But the star for the Wildcats in the field was catcher JC Santini, who threw out Purdue's Curtis Washington - the Big Ten leader in steals - for the first time this season. Santini is now second in the Big Ten with 14 runners caught stealing in 2022.
Northwestern will wrap up their final Big Ten home series of the season on Sunday at 11am from Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
