Northwestern Downs CMU 22-7, Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 4 overall seed Northwestern cruised past Central Michigan, 22-7, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on Friday evening. The Wildcats (14-4) advance to the second round and will face Michigan at Martin Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
Nine Wildcats recorded a multi-goal game, the most in a single game this season. Erin Coykendall and Jill Girardi led the way with three goals each, while Lauren Gilbert, Brennan Dwyer, Samantha White, Carleigh Mahoney, Dylan Amonte, Greta Stahl, and Kiera Shanley each scored two goals.
The Wildcats tallied 20+ goals in game for the fifth time this season. The 15 goal differential is tied for the second largest margin of victory in an NCAA Tournament game in program history. Northwestern outshot CMU 48-17 in the game and led in draw controls, 22-9.
Coynkendall opened the scoring for Northwestern 44 seconds into the game on an assist from Lauren Gilbert, before Central Michigan (12-8) quickly tied the game with a free-position goal. The Chippewas and 'Cats battled back and forth to start the first period, with Northwestern falling behind 2-1 but quickly fighting back to grab a 3-2 lead after goals by Brennan Dwyer and Elle Hansen.
The Wildcats broke away after CMU tied the game at four, scoring four unanswered goals to end the first quarter and finishing the game on an 18-3 run. Leah Holmes, Carleigh Mahoney and Gilbert scored, while Coykendall picked up her second and third goals of the quarter and an assist as Northwestern took an 8-3 lead into the first break.
Girardi led Northwestern with five draw controls in the first quarter, while Ally Palermo caused a team-high two turnovers.
Northwestern continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring Central Michigan 7-1 in the period and taking a 15-4 lead into halftime. Dylan Amonte and Girardi each scored twice, while Samantha White, Mahoney, and Gilbert each contributed a goal as well.
Madison Doucette made three saves in the first half, while Kendall Halpern and White each had two ground balls. Claire Snyder led the team with three ground balls.
The 'Cats came out firing again to start the second half, scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Wildcats outscored Central Michigan 7-2 in the second half, with the entire half played under a running clock.
Kiera Shanley tallied a goal and assist in the fourth quarter for her second-career multi-point game. Greta Stahl scored her third goal of the season and first career NCAA Tournament goal in the final period. Helaina Harris and Logan Lillie both played in net for the Wildcats in the second half.
Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller improved her NCAA Tournament record to 47-10 and 27-0 when playing in Evanston.
