No. 3 Wildcats Trample Penn, 17-9

PHILADELPHIA – The No. 3 Northwestern lacrosse team completed a successful Pennsylvania road trip by defeating Penn 17-9 on Sunday afternoon.

Jill Girardi provided a lift for the Wildcats (10-2) both at the net and in the circle. She led the team with four goals – alongside Lauren Gilbert who also netted four – and eight draw controls. Meanwhile Erin Coykendall, Carleigh Mahoney and Leah Holmes added two apiece.

Northwestern got off to a slow start, but Girardi quickly took control of the Wildcat offense. She completed her hat trick in just the first quarter and put the 'Cats ahead of the Quakers 4-2.

Holmes added two back-to-back goals to start the second quarter to give NU a comfortable four-goal advantage going into halftime.

The Wildcats opened the second half on a 6-0 scoring run, powered by two goals from Mahoney and capped off with a strike from Coykendall. Holding a 14-4 lead, the 'Cats went into the final quarter with a running clock.

Coykendall added another goal off the top and Greta Stahl scored the last goal for the Wildcats, her first of the season.

Penn dropped to 3-7 on the season.

Northwestern returns home to face Rutgers at 7:30 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 7 for its first game of the year outdoors at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
