BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northwestern opened its weekend series at Indiana with an 8-1 victory on Friday night as Danielle Williams became the first Big Ten pitcher to reach 20 wins on the season.
Hannah Cady led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two solo home runs in what marked the first multi-home run game of her career. Cady led off the second inning with a solo shot to straightaway center field, then went back-to-back with Angela Zedak in the fifth inning with an opposite field poke over the left field fence.
Cady and Zedak's homers in the fifth inning were a part of a five-run inning, with all of the runs coming with two outs.
Additionally, Nikki Cuchran continued her career year at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. It marked the 14th multi-hit game of the year for Cuchran, tying her with Skyler Shellmyer for the most on the team.
Williams improved to 20-2 after tossing her 16th complete game of the season, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out 10, marking her 10th double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as three-straight batters reached base with two outs. Jordyn Rudd and Maeve Nelson each came around to score with the help of a pair of Hoosier errors. Cuchran recorded her first RBI of the game with an RBI-single to bring around Nelson and extend the Wildcats' lead to 2-0 in the opening frame.
Leading 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, Cuchran provided the 'Cats with some insurance yet again with a two-out RBI-single to right-center to bring around pinch runner Ayana Lindsey. Immediately after Cuchran, Zedak launched a no-doubter home run to the deepest part of Andy Mohr Field in left center to force an Indiana pitching change. Cady wasted no time welcoming the new Hoosier pitcher, hitting an opposite field homer down the left field line for her second long ball of the game.
Zedak now has seven homers on the year, tied with Rudd for the third-most on the team, while Cady now has five homers. Cady has now reached base in six-consecutive games and is hitting .538 (9-of-17) with 10 RBI in that six-game span dating back to the start of last weekend's series against Purdue.
The Wildcats and Hoosiers are slated to face off in prime time once again on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 5 pm CT and will be televised nationally on Big Ten Network with Lisa Byington heading up the call.
