'Cats Finish Weekend 5-0 With Doubleheader Sweep

3/6/2022 8:48:00 PM | Softball

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Northwestern wrapped up its weekend at Southern Illinois' 'Coach B Classic' with a pair of high-powered performances from its offense en route to a perfect 5-0 showing at its weekend series downstate.

The Wildcats defeated Ball State, 10-4, in game one of its twin bill before taking down Northern Kentucky for the second time of this weekend by a score of 7-2.

Northwestern improves to 15-4 on the season, tied for the best start through as many games in Kate Drohan's 21-year tenure as head coach.

Against Ball State, the Wildcats jumped out to a big lead early thanks to five-run innings in both the second and third frames. Maeve Nelson kicked off the scoring with a lead-off home run, her second long ball of the weekend.

With a 2-0 lead in the second, Skyler Shellmyer and Jordyn Rudd kept the scoring going with a two-out RBI double and a two-RBI single, respectively.

The Wildcats followed up their five-spot in the second inning with five more in the third. Each of the first four NU batters reached base and NU then proceeded to capitalize on back-to-back errors from the Cardinals' infield to extend the lead to 10-0.

Sydney Supple finished game one with 3.1 IP, three earned runs and three strikeouts, while Lauren Dvorak pitched the final 3.2 innings en route to her fourth win of the season.

The 'Cats jumped out to a lead yet again in game two vs. Northern Kentucky, thanks to a one-out single from Rudd to score Rachel Lewis. NU tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning after Grace Nieto scored on a wild pitch and Shellmyer stole home.

Lewis extended the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to left field, her team-leading sixth long ball of the season to bring her career total to 48 home runs, the fifth-most in program and just nine away from tying Tammy Williams (57) as the program's all-time home run leader.

Hannah Cady led off the ffith inning with a solo shot to extend the lead to 6-0. It marked Cady's first homer of the season. Later in the inning, Lewis tacked on another RBI with a sacrific fly to right field.

Danielle Williams earned the win in game two, allowing just four hits and two runs off a seventh-inning homer while striking out 11. It marked Williams' second game of the weekend striking out 10+ batters and her fourth game of the season. She improves to 9-1 on the year, the most wins in the Big Ten.

After a week off, Northwestern returns to action for a five-game invitational at the University of Missouri from March 18-20.
