EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern opened Big Ten play with a 4-3 win over Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 39 in the latest ITA poll, improved to 6-4 and dropped the No. 51 Badgers to 9-6.
Northwestern took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Clarissa Hand and Maria Shusharina overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the ranked duo of Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova, 6-3. Briana Crowley and Christina Hand completed a spirited comeback from 5-2 down to a 7-5 win to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
Ema Lazic got on the board first for the Wildcats in singles, with a straight sets win over Antonela Stoica, which tied the match at 2-2.
Sydney Pratt battled in her second set at No. 3 but could not get the win, and Cl. Hand played a strong second set but fell in a three-set decision at No. 1.
Down 3-2, the 'Cats battled back with a pair of clutch three set wins at No. 5 and No. 2. Justine Leong came bak for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Taylor Cataldi to tie the match at 5-5. Then Shusharina clinched the match with a strong finish to the third set for a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 victory.
The 'Cats are back in action tomorrow when they host Minnesota, ranked No. 42 at noon.
