Northwestern Steams Past Boilermakers 80-67

2/4/2022 5:54:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northwestern cruised past Purdue 80-67 on the road Friday night. The 13-point win was the Wildcats' largest in conference play this season, and it marked the first time they hit 80 points this year.

After the game was pushed back a day due to snow in Evanston, the Wildcats brought the blizzard with them to West Lafayette. The patented Northwestern defense shut down the Boilermakers, out rebounding their opponents 41-27 and forcing 16 turnovers behind 11 steals. They were particularly strong on the offensive boards, coming away with 16 offensive rebounds.

Veronica Burton posted a vintage performance, tallying 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting, her fifth game of the season over the 20-point mark. She also contributed six rebounds, three assists and six steals en route to Northwestern's third-straight win over Purdue.

Chicago's Big Ten Team jumped out to an early lead behind 3-pointers from Burton, Lauryn Satterwhite and Caileigh Walsh. Satterwhite, who finished with two made threes, has now connected from deep in six-straight games and has made multiple from beyond the arc in half those games.

Satterwhite, Walsh and Laya Hartman all joined Burton in the double-digit points club with the trio combining for 35 points.

Courtney Shaw, meanwhile, came up one point shy of her sixth double-double of the season, scoring nine points and bringing down a team-high 13 rebounds. Shaw now has posted 14 games with 10 or more rebounds this season. Kaylah Rainey also made noise on the glass with a career-high five rebounds, including one high-effort offensive board that she then dished to Paige Mott for an assist in the second quarter.

The Wildcats will stay on the road this weekend, seeking to take revenge on Penn State in University Park Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. They will face these Boilermakers again at home for Senior Night later this season on February 24. Live coverage of both games can be found on B1G+ and WNUR Sports.
