SOUTH BEND, Ind. — No. 6 Northwestern continues its rugged non-conference schedule Wednesday, Feb. 23, with a showdown at No. 17 Notre Dame with first draw set for 6 p.m. CT.
The Wildcats (2-1) ride a two-game win streak into Wednesday's game, having picked up commanding 11-goal and eight-goal victories last week over Marquette and Arizona State, respectively.
Northwestern's new-look offense flashed its versatility in both wins. After Lauren Gilbert, Erin Coykendall and Leah Holmes all scored five or more goals against the Golden Eagles, the first time Northwestern accomplished that feat since 2009, the 'Cats found new top scorers against the Sun Devils in Brennan Dwyer and Hannah Johnson. Dwyer, who ranks third in Northwestern history in draw controls, led the way with a career-high five goals, four of which came in the fourth quarter. A sophomore defender, Johnson also notched a career-high four goals while making her first career start.
The multi-pronged attack will be tested against a Notre Dame (1-2) team that has dropped two straight after winning its season opener against Central Michigan. Northwestern leads the all-time series 21-5 over the Fighting Irish and has won the last two straight in South Bend. The teams have also met seven times in the NCAA Tournament and Northwestern has prevailed in six of those games, including first round wins en route to Northwestern's national titles in 2008 and 2012.
Wednesday's game marks the first of a four-game stretch for Northwestern against teams ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Top 25. After facing No. 17 Notre Dame, the Wildcats stare down No. 3 Syracuse, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 4 Stony Brook in consecutive games. Syracuse and North Carolina both joined Northwestern in the Final Four last season. Northwestern faced Boston College, the other team in that group, in the season opener.
