BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Northwestern held their own against No. 5 Indiana, but were unable to overcome a fourth quarter skid and fell 69-58 at Assembly Hall on Thursday evening.
Veronica Burton led the Wildcats once again with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Those four steals vaulted her into third place in career steals in Big Ten History. Jillian Brown and Lauryn Satterwhite followed behind with 14 points apiece. Satterwhite drained four baskets from deep, matching her previous career high.
Brown, reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, got to the basket first and opened up scoring early. Indiana responded quickly to take the lead, but Brown drained a three to keep things close.
The 'Cats began to cool off in the second quarter, falling to eight points behind the Hoosiers. Burton got the Wildcats cooking again by dishing out a dime to Brown for a three, before turning around and grabbing a steal for some easy points in transition. Northwestern went into the halftime break just behind Indiana, 32-28.
Both teams traded points back and forth in the third quarter, with no team catching any momentum. After Satterwhite hit her fourth triple of the game, Burton was able to put away two quick lay-ups for a 7-0 run and the lead. The Hoosiers responded with a run of their own to end the quarter with a six-point advantage.
Northwestern started off the final quarter hot with Brown, Burton and Courtney Shaw hitting easy layups early, but the Hoosiers quickly took over and manifested an eleven-point lead.
The Wildcats will stay on the road and hit the court again to face off against the Fighting Illini on Sunday at 4 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
