CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Wildcats trounced the Fighting Illini, 82-59, behind career performances from Veronica Burton and Courtney Shaw.
Shaw led the Wildcats with a career-high 20 points – on 10 of 11 shooting – and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Burton posted 13 points to go along with career-highs in assists with 14 and steals with nine; putting her just short of a triple-double. Her nine steals set an arena record at State Farm Center.
Lauryn Satterwhite and Laya Hartman also posted double-digit points, ending the night with 14 and 10 respectively.
Northwestern got off to a hot start, with Burton grabbing two back-to-back steals for some easy points. The Illini quickly caught up, but Caileigh Walsh brought some heat off the bench to fend them off and pull out a 6-0 run to end the quarter.
Both teams traded points and possessions early in the second quarter and Illinois started to creep up on the 'Cats. Shaw wasn't having it and took over the Wildcat offense, scoring a whopping 10 points to generate a 7-0 run and an 11-point lead going into the half-time break.
Satterwhite kicked things off for Northwestern in the third quarter draining a triple with ease. Hartman followed Satterwhite's lead, dropping a triple and a couple of layups of her own. Walsh found the last bucket of the quarter, extending the Wildcat lead to 58-41.
Burton staged a take over of the Northwestern offense in the final quarter, draining a three and putting up two easy layups to seal the game. Hailey Weaver and Anna Morris finished out scoring for the 'Cats with a pair of triples.
The Wildcats will return home next Thursday for a senior night showdown against Purdue at 7 p.m. CT.
