MADISON, Wis. — No. 16 Northwestern women's swimming and diving travels north for the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wisconsin this week. The competition starts at 5 p.m. CT Wednesday and runs through Saturday night with races beginning at 10 a.m. CT Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Live coverage of all four days of the Championships can be found on B1G+.

The Wildcats put together a historic performance at last year's Big Ten Championships, finishing fourth with 992 points as a team, shattering the program record set just one year prior. They set new school records in six different events and brought home 12 medals.

Northwestern enters this years competition off a strong finish to the regular season. It dominated the tri-dual meet against Minnesota and Iowa, taking home 12 gold medals from 19 events. The 'Cats again flashed their supremacy in breaststroke, sweeping the podium with Tara Vovk, Hannah Brunzell and Sophie Angus in both the 100 and 200 breast. All three swimmers finished more than a second faster than the next best in the 100 and more than 4.5 seconds faster than the next best in the 200. The 100 breast will be competed on Friday at the Big Ten Championships, and the 200 breast will race on Saturday.

Four school records were tied or broken in that meet. Jasmine Nocentini matched Maddie Smith's school record in the 50 free, touching in 21.92 to secure gold. Lola Mull set a new school record in the 1,000 free, finishing in 9:34.56 to shatter Valeria Gruest's mark of 9:37.23 set in 2017. The 200 free relay made up of Smith, Nocentini, Ally Larson and Kendra Gupta recorded a time of 1:28.50 to beat the previous record by two-tenths of a second, and the 400 free relay of Smith, Larson, Anika Wagner and Nocentini finished in 3:14.56 for the school's new top time.

In addition to the record-setting swimmers, Chicago's Big Ten Team brings a talented stable of divers to Madison. Markie Hopkins, the 2020 Big Ten champion in the platform dive, boasts Northwestern's best score of the season in the 3M at 354.60. Jaye Patrick has the team's best score in the 1M at 341.2 recorded against Wisconsin. Overall, Northwestern has six divers in both the 1M and 3M with NCAA Zone Standard Scores. The 1M competes Thursday at the Big Ten Championships, followed by the 3M on Friday and the platform dive on Saturday.

Session One:

Northwestern got off to a historic start in the first evening of competition in Madison, smashing a pair of school records in the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay.
In the 200 Medley Relay, Emma Lepisova, Tara Vovk, Maddie Smith and Jasmine Nocentini went 1:35.23, a time that not only secured their place in the Northwestern record books, but hit the NCAA A Cut time and brought home a bronze medal in the first event of the 2021 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Later that night, Ally Larson, Lola Mull, Annika Wagner and Nocentini broke the school record in the 800 Freestyle Relay, swimming 7:04.60 to deliver a top-five finish for the 'Cats.

Three more school records fell on the second day of competition in Madison - including Jasmine Nocentini smashing her own record in the 50 free just a few hours after setting it on Thursday. Her 21.78 swim in the final of the 50 free took another .02 seconds off her mark from earlier in the day, as the Italian sprinter continues to dominate at Big Tens with a third-place finish.

Same stroke, different distance for Lola Mulla - The sophomore broke the school record in the 500 free with a 4:39.03 mark that also secured a second-place finish in the conference. And on the second night of relays, the 400-medley team of Emma Lepisova, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara and Maddie Smith delivered a 3:29.47 performance that not only secured third-place in the Big Ten but an NCAA A Cut swim.

Two more school records fell on Saturday night in Madison, as Miriam Guevara rewrote the Northwestern record book in the 100 fly, posting a 51.38 swim for the Wildcats.

In the 200 free relay, Ally Larson, Jasmine Hellmer, Maddie Smith and Jasmine Nocentini - in her fourth record-breaking performance of the weekend - set the Northwestern record with a 1:28.28 swim.

Session Four:

Lola Mull was back in action on the final night of competition in Madison, breaking the school record with a second-place finish in the 1650 free behind a 15:51.38 swim to add to her impressive weekend in the pool.

She wasn't the only Wildcat to deliver on Saturday, as Emma Lepisova snagged a third-place finish in the 200 back (1:53.37) before Maddie Smith broke the school record in the 100 free (47.71).
