EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 5 Northwestern welcomes the Arizona State to Ryan Fieldhouse for week two of the season, with first draw set for noon CT on Sunday, Feb. 20.
Sunday's matchup will honor the Wildcats' 2021 Big Ten Championship, a feat achieved last May with a 17-12 victory over Maryland in the title game. Northwestern (1-1) has won back-to-back Big Ten Tournaments, having also beaten the Terrapins in 2019. The conference crown marked a major milestone as part of a historic campaign last year that culminated in the 12th Final Four appearance in program history. Northwestern plans to also recognize seniors from the 2020 season and a few members of the 2012 national champion team.
The 'Cats enter Sunday's game with Arizona State coming off a dominant 24-13 win over Marquette on Monday night. Lauren Gilbert, a member of the preseason Tewaaraton watch list, flashed her hallmark speed and precision en route to a team-high six goals, while Erin Coykendall and Leah Holmes each poured in five goals of their own. It marked the first time since February 27, 2009, against Vanderbilt that Northwestern has had three different scorers with five or more goals in the same game.
Meanwhile, the first-years Samantha Smith and Samantha White, led the way on the draw control with five and four, respectively. Defensively, Ally Palermo looked like her All-American self, causing three turnovers and holding a high-flying Marquette offense at bay.
The matchup with the Sun Devils (0-0) will be the second-ever meeting between the programs, with Northwestern winning the first game, 28-12. Fourteen different Wildcats scored in that showdown with Gilbert sending a team-high five into the net.
Arizona State has yet to see game action this season. Its matchup with the Wildcats will mark the end of a two-game tour of Big Ten country to kick-off the Sun Devils' season. They play their first game Friday against Michigan in Ann Arbor.
