EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern took down No. 4 Michigan, 71-69, in a double-overtime thriller at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
It is the 'Cats first top-5 win in over five years, last stunning No. 5 Ohio State at Welsh-Ryan on Jan. 5, 2016.
Northwestern's last double-overtime game also came on a Super Bowl Sunday, when the 'Cats fell to Minnesota, 112-106, on Feb. 7, 2016.
Trailing by five entering the fourth quarter, the 'Cats managed to hold Michigan to 3-of-14 shooting and force overtime. Jillian Brown led Northwestern with six points in the fourth frame, while Veronica Burton and Courtney Shaw chipped in five and four points a piece.
Veronica Burton dominated the overtime periods, scoring eight of her 13 points thanks in part to six free throws.
With the game tied at 69, four seconds remaining, and Michigan ball, the Backcourt Burglar came up with a clutch steal for Northwestern, then drew a foul on the ensuing inbounds play before knocking down both free throws to seal the game.
Despite a tough shooting day (2-of-13 FG), Burton still managed to make a huge impact on the game. Burton grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a career-high 13 assists, including six in the first quarter, to go along with her 13 points. The Newton, Mass. native sits in second on the conference leaderboard at 6.4 assists per game and leads the Big Ten with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio after turning the ball over just once this game. It is the sixth-career double-double for Burton and third collegiate game with 10+ assists.
First-year Jillian Brown led the Wildcats with a career-high 18 points, including nine in the first quarter, on 7-of-14 shooting. Brown also tied career highs with eight rebounds and two blocks, while snatching a career-high three steals.
Matched-up against All-American Naz Hillmon, Courtney Shaw scored a career-high 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and tallied three steals. Shaw leads the team and sits in third in the Big Ten at 9.9 rebounds per game, and is one four players in the conference averaging at least a steal and a block per game.
With another 10 steals today, the Wildcat's season average moves to 10.13 steals per game, most in the Big Ten. It is the 'Cats 17th game this year with 10+ steals.
Chicago's Big Ten Team looks to keep its momentum going as it travels to Bloomington to take on Indiana on Thursday at 5 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
