
Girardi Scores Four Goals in Season-Opening Setback at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Graduate student Jill Girardi scored a career-best four goals, but No. 1 Boston College utilized high scoring first and fourth periods to defeat No. 4 Northwestern, 18-9, in the 2022 season opener at Fish Field House on Saturday afternoon.
Girardi, a member of the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, scored all of her goals in the first half, besting her previous career mark of three goals against Detroit Mercy (Feb. 7, 2020). Defending national champion Boston College scored three unanswered goals to start the game, and held a 6-1 advantage after the first quarter. Girardi registered her first goal with 12:08 on the first quarter clock. Northwestern made some adjustments to cut the deficit to 7-4 on Girardi's fourth goal with 3:30 to play in the second period.
Each side scored two goals in the third stanza, with junior Erin Coykendall and sophomore Carleigh Mahoney scoring back-to-back goals bringing NU's deficit to 9-6. Boston College outscored Northwestern 8-3 in the final quarter. First-year Samantha Smith brought a spark to the Wildcats, scoring her first two collegiate goals. Graduate student Lauren Gilbert tallied her first goal on the season to cap NU's offensive output.
Senior goalkeeper Madison Doucette set a career-high by making 12 saves while facing 41 shots. Rachel Hall recorded eight saves on 27 shots faced for BC.
2021 Tewaaraton Award winner Charlotte North scored a game-high seven goals for the Eagles.
The Wildcats open their 2022 home slate at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, against Marquette inside Ryan Fieldhouse.
