EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern hosts No. 4 Michigan in its penultimate home game of the season on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena in the Wildcats' Play4Kay Game and Alumni Day. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. CT on B1G+ and WNUR Sports.
All fans are encouraged to wear PINK to the game in support of raising breast cancer awareness. The first 150 fans can pick up a free pink shirt atop section 109 while they last, and all fans are asked to fill out an "I Play4" card in the main lobby for a first half media timeout.
The 'Cats will look for their second ranked win of the season against the Wolverines, who are in second place in a fierce Big Ten title race with an 11-2 conference record, coming off an upset on Thursday at the hands of in-state rivals Michigan State.
Northwestern is coming off a 74-68 loss on Minnesota on Friday, its third road game in a row. The 'Cats committed just eight turnovers and owned a 30-18 advantage in paint points, but the Gophers' 10-19 effort from deep was too much to overcome.
Veronica Burton managed another stellar performance in defeat, finishing with 27 points on 9-17 shooting and 4-8 from deep, along with seven assists, four rebounds, four steals and a career-high four blocks.
Only five other players in Division I women's basketball since 2009 have recorded a game with 25 points, five assists, four blocks and four steals.
Burton is now back atop the NCAA leaderboard in steals per game with 4.1, where she finished the 2020-21 season. She is two steals away from fourth place all-time in Big Ten history.
Burton will square off against fellow Big Ten superstar Naz Hillmon, who joined Burton on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Watch List this past week. The two were teammates this past summer for USA Basketball as the team claimed a gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup in Puerto Rico. Hillmon is 12 points away from 2,000 in her career.
Sunday will mark the eighth, and possibly final chapter, between Burton and Hillmon, who have participated in one of the Big Ten's best series over the past three years. It includes six split matchups in the last two seasons, mirrored with regular season sweeps for one side and Big Ten Tournament revenge for the other, culminating in last year's 65-49 win for the 'Cats.
