Northwestern Falls 66-77 to Michigan

ANN ARBOR, MICH. -- Northwestern played a close game, but ended up falling to the Michigan Wolverines on the road Sunday, losing by a final score of 66-77.

The Wildcats (4-4, 0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Jillian Brown, who had 17 points and four steals. Caileigh Walsh tacked on 12 points and four blocks and Melannie Daley chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench.

Northwestern took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Sunday's game, piling up 15 assists on 25 made field goals. Kaylah Rainey's four assists led the distribution list for the Wildcats.

The Northwestern defense caused its share of mistakes in Sunday's game, forcing 19 Michigan turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Rainey's six steals led the way individually for the Wildcats.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-0, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run with 6:37 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Walsh, to take a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-13 advantage. Northwestern relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 14 points.

The Wildcats could not maintain their lead in the second quarter, however, and entered halftime trailing 28-26.

Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-31 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Walsh, to grab a 37-36 lead with 6:17 to go in the third. Michigan responded to seize a 51-45 lead entering the fourth quarter. Northwestern knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

Michigan kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-53 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Brown's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 61-59 with 3:49 to go in the contest. Michigan responded and outscored the Wildcats the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-66. Northwestern took advantage of seven Michigan turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
