
Second Half Rally Lifts Blue Demons Over Wildcats

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 81-63 to the DePaul Blue Demons at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday.
The Wildcats (4-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Paige Mott, who had 10 points and seven rebounds. Caileigh Walsh added 10 points and Sydney Wood added seven points, six assists and two steals.
Mott pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Northwestern went on a 5-0 run with 8:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Walsh, to take a 7-2 lead. The Wildcats then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-17.
DePaul kept adding to that lead, building a 24-17 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 24-23. The Wildcats were unable to narrow the gap any further, but did not lose ground either and entered halftime with a 34-33 deficit.
DePaul continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-37 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Caroline Lau, to trim its deficit to 47-43 with 3:25 to go in the third. DePaul countered and stretched its lead to 59-48 heading into the fourth. Northwestern's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 15 third-quarter points.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, falling by a final of 81-63. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 15 points in the paint.
