EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats will return to action at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday as they open their home conference schedule against No. 3 Ohio State. Tip-off between the 'Cats and the Buckeyes is set for 8 p.m., with action televised on Big Ten Network.
Northwestern (6-5, 0-1) heads into their first matchup in nearly two weeks on a two-game win streak. The 'Cats defeated UIC on the road on December 14 before taking down Air Force at Welsh-Ryan Arena on December 17.
Caileigh Walsh has continued to lead the offensive charge for NU. The sophomore has already collected single-game career highs for both points and rebounds and notched her first career double-double. She has scored in double-digits in seven straight games, and she'll head into Wednesday's game as Northwestern's leading scorer after averaging 13.4 points per game so far this season.
Sydney Wood has also been in on the action. Wood tied for the team lead in points (13) and rebounds (7) against Air Force and is averaging career highs in both categories this season, with 11.4 and 4.8 per game respectively. On top of the points and boards, the grad student has racked up 29 steals in 11 games so far, making her third in the Big Ten in steals per game and putting her on track to finish the season with 79.
Walsh, Wood and the Wildcats will face a tough opponent on Wednesday in an undefeated Ohio State squad. The Buckeyes have swept their schedule so far, including both Big Ten matchups and all six road games. Northwestern and Ohio State have each taken one of their last two against one another, but the Buckeyes hold the edge in the all-time series, 45-21.
After Wednesday's game, the 'Cats will stick around Evanston and prepare to host Michigan State on Monday as they continue their Big Ten schedule.
