Wildcats Fall to #3 Ohio State in Big Ten Home Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. –Northwestern fell 81-48 to #3 Ohio State at home Wednesday in the Big Ten Home Opener at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The Wildcats (6-6, 0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Jillian Brown, who had 13 points, three steals and two blocks. Courtney Shaw tacked on a double-double off of the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Caileigh Walsh added seven points and two steals.

Shaw pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.

Northwestern forced 17 Ohio State turnovers. The Wildcats turned those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brown's three steals led the way for Northwestern.

How It Happened

Northwestern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-2, before battling back to trim the Buckeye lead to 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.

OSU outscored the 'Cats 17-11 in the second frame to take a 35-24 lead into halftime.

Northwestern's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Wildcats faced a 59-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. The Wildcats scored eight of their 14 third quarter points in the paint.

Northwestern shrunk the deficit to 64-46 with 6:46 to go in the contest, but OSU closed the game on a 17-2 run, ending the game with a final score of 81-48.
