CHICAGO, IL -- Northwestern ended on the right side of a back-and-forth battle with the UIC Flames on Wednesday, coming away with a 66-62 win on the road.

The Wildcats (5-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Caileigh Walsh, who put together her first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sydney Wood added 15 points and four steals and Paige Mott chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.

The Northwestern defense held UIC shooters to only 31 percent from the field, including 17.6 percent from three-point range. The Wildcats also kept Josie Filer to 3-of-15 shooting and eight points in the game.

How It Happened

After playing to a 4-4 tie early in the game, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run with 3:55 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mott, to take a 10-4 lead. The Wildcats then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 10-7 advantage. Northwestern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.

UIC rallied to take a 20-18 lead in the second period, but Northwestern came back late in the quarter to retake a 23-20 lead. The back-and-forth period continued when the Flames took a 26-24 lead, which they'd carry into halftime.

The Flames continued to increase their lead after halftime, building a 28-24 advantage before Northwestern went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wood, to grab a 32-28 lead with 6:30 to go in the third. The Flames then rallied to tie it at 40-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Northwestern played well near the basket in the third, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.

The 'Cats kept it close before going on an 11-0 run to seize a 53-42 lead with 6:35 to go in the contest. The Flames narrowed the margin to as little as two points before the game was over, but the Wildcats still held on for the 66-62 win. Northwestern got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 11 of their 26 total points.
