Double-Doubles Not Enough in 66-50 Loss to Duke

DURHAM, NC -- Paige Mott and Sydney Wood both recorded their first career double-doubles, but Northwestern fell to the Duke Blue Devils 66-50 on the road Thursday.
The double-doubles by Mott, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Wood, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds, led the Wildcats (4-3) in the contest. Caileigh Walsh helped out with 13 points.
Wood pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 19 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.
Northwestern forced 21 Duke turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Thursday's game. The Wildcats turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hailey Weaver led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
Northwestern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 32-12 halftime deficit.
Duke continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-19 advantage before Northwestern went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Walsh, to trim its deficit to 47-24 with 1:05 to go in the third. Duke countered and stretched its lead to 52-27 heading into the fourth.
Northwestern came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wood's layup, to shrink the deficit to 52-33 with 6:57 to go in the contest. The Wildcats kept their comeback going, but Duke managed to hold on for the 66-50 win. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 23 points in the paint.
