EUGENE, Ore. – Northwestern is set to kick off its 2022 season with a trip to Eugene, Oregon to face the No. 20-ranked Oregon Ducks on Monday evening, with tip-off set for 5 pm CT.
Led by Head Coach Joe McKeown in his 15th season at the helm of Northwestern Women's Basketball, the Wildcats return 10 of their top 12 scorers from last season, including 2022 All-Big Ten honorable mention selection Courtney Shaw, and two-time All-Big Ten honoree Sydney Wood who each return for their fifth seasons.
The Wildcats have won 13 conseuctive season-openers under McKeown, dating back to 2008. It marks their first time opening the season on the road since 2018, when the 'Cats won a dramatic 57-55 matchup over Green Bay, as well as their first season-opener against a ranked opponent since 1994-95 (at #17 Washington).
Northwestern returns four of its six players to eclipse 500 minutes last season, including Laya Hartman, Shaw, Jillian Brown, and Caileigh Walsh. Wood returns to the Wildcats for a fifth season after having her 2021-22 campaign cut short following just four games. Additionally, the 'Cats welcome three first-years in Alana Goodchild (Sydney, Australia), Caroline Lau (Westport, Conn.), and Lauren Trumpy (Camp Hill, Penn.), as well as new assistant coaches Maggie Lyon (NU '16) and Brittany Johnson.
As a first-year in 2022, Walsh ranked second among all Big Ten players with 40 blocks while averaging 7.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. The 6'3 forward from Sparta, New Jersey scored in double-figures in 10 different games last season and will look to build on those strong scoring performances entering her sophomore campaign.
Shaw earned All-Big Ten recognition for the first time in her career in 2022 after averaging a team-leading 10.0 rebounds per game (third in the Big Ten and second-most among all returning Big Ten players).
Following their trip to Oregon, Northwestern returns home to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a stretch of five-straight home games to continue their challenging non-conference slate. The Wildcats' home-opener is scheduled for Sunday, November 13 against Penn with tip-off scheduled for 12 pm CT.
