COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Northwestern (three seed) meets No. 2 Maryland (two seed) Friday in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals with a trip to the conference championship game on the line. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. CT in Columbus, Ohio and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

STORYLINES

» The Wildcats advanced to the semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons with a 2-1 overtime win against No. 18 Rutgers Thursday night. Chicago's Big Ten Team is looking to make its first Big Ten championship game appearance since 2014, also the year Northwestern won its first Big Ten Tournament title. It beat Michigan 2-1 in overtime that season before defeating Maryland in the championship game.

» Senior captain Peyton Halsey secured Northwestern's quarterfinal victory Thursday with a walk-off penalty-stroke goal four minutes into overtime. It marked Halsey's second overtime golden goal from the spot in 2022, previously doing so to walk off Penn State in September, and she is now a perfect 3-of-3 on penalty strokes this season. The goal also propelled Northwestern to its fifth overtime win of the season, the most in the Big Ten.

» Kayla Blas, the 2022 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, is primed for a historic day in the semifinals – the fifth-year will play in her 100th career game as a Wildcat, the only player to reach that mark, and will also celebrate her birthday. Additionally, Blas assisted Northwestern's first goal of the game against Rutgers and has now recorded an assist in five straight games, bringing her season total to a career-high 13 this season.

» Lauren Wadas scored Northwestern's opening goal against the Scarlet Knights to give the Wildcats a 1-0 halftime lead and has now scored in three of the last four games. Wadas' current hot streak featured the walk-off overtime winner against Michigan, a performance that netted her first career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week accolades.

» Northwestern dominated penalty corners in the opening round, winning the penalty corner battle 8-1 in the first half before taking the overall battle 10-5. The Wildcats are averaging over three more penalty corners per game than their opponents this season and they boast the best primary corner unit in the conference. Alia Marshall (inserter), Kayla Blas (stick stopper) and Bente Baekers (shooter) have combined on six goals this season, more than any other trio in the Big Ten.

MATCHUP INFO

NO. 2 MARYLAND (Friday, November 4, 3 p.m. CT)

» Friday's game marks the 31st all-time meeting between Northwestern and Maryland. It will also be their fourth ever meeting in the Big Ten Tournament, a series notably headlined by the Wildcats' win in the 2014 championship game to secure their first Big Ten Tournament title.

» Maryland won the regular season matchup 2-1 on October 2, the only game Northwestern has lost in overtime this season. The elite penalty corner trio of Alia Marshall, Kayla Blas and Bente Baekers combined for Northwestern's third minute goal in that game.
