LOS ANGELES –– After a 3-0 shutout victory over SIUE in the First Round, Northwestern women's soccer will take on Vanderbilt in the Second Round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The Second Round matchup will take place at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on the campus of UCLA at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+. The winner will advance to take on the winner of the second game on Friday night between UCLA and UCF.
Northwestern reached the Second Round for the fifth time in school history by defeating SIUE on a chilly day at Martin Stadium this past Saturday afternoon. The 'Cats came out of the gate hot, firing the game's first four shots on target, but were unable to find the back of the net until Meg Boade slipped through the Cougar defense for her seventh goal of the season in the 38th minute.
Josie Aulicino doubled the Wildcat lead six minutes later with a strike from over 25 yards out, placing the ball just over the Cougar Goalkeeper's outstretched hands to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead one minute before the break. The Wildcats held on tightly to the lead in the second half, outshooting the Cougars 12-0, after outshooting them 12-1 in the first half. - A win against Vanderbilt would:
- move Northwestern ahead to the Sweet Sixteen, the farthest the program has ever advanced.
- give the Wildcats 16 wins, tying the marks set in 1998 and 2016 for most in program history.
- Friday's game marks Northwestern's third ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round, most recently in 2017, when they fell to UCLA at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
- NU's 4-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament is the highest seed in program history.
- Eight Wildcats were named All-Big Ten, the most of any school this season and the most in program history.
- NU tallied 23 goals in conference play, the most in program history.
- Northwestern entered the NCAA Tournament ranked 12th in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and 17th in RPI.
- Four Wildcats will be returning to their home state this weekend (Aurea del Carmen, Gabriella Grust, Jennifer McGuire, and Charis Toney).
The Commodores boast a 12-4-4 record, including a 5-3-2 mark in SEC play. Vandy advanced to the SEC Tournament Semifinals before bowing out to #3 Alabama. The Commodores are led offensively by Raegan Kelley, who has tallied 10 goals and 8 assists so far this year. After missing most of September and October, Sara Wojdelko has taken over goalkeeping duties for VU, posing a .824 save percentage and 0.665 goals against average in 811 minutes this season. Four Commodores were awarded all-SEC honors, including Kelley and defender Maya Antione (First Team), defender Ella Shamburger (Second Team), and Hannah McLaughlin (All-Freshman Team).
Northwestern has a 6-6-1 record all-time in the Big Dance, advancing as far as the Sweet 16 in 1998 and 2016. The last time the 'Cats advanced to the Second Round was 2017, when they fell to UCLA 1-0 (OT) at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
Friday night's contest between Northwestern and Vanderbilt will be followed by a matchup between 1-seed UCLA and UCF. The winner of each matchup will meet on Sunday night at 8 p.m. CT/6 p.m. PT at Wallis Annenberg Stadium on ESPN+.
