MILWAUKEE, Wis. –– Northwestern women's soccer head coach Michael Moynihan was inducted to the Bud K. Haidet Milwaukee Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 12.
As head coach, Moynihan's teams went 193-84-38 and 86-8-5 in Horizon League play. Over 15 years at the helm, he coached four All-Americans, 22 all-region selections, seven Horizon League Players of the Year, five Horizon League Newcomers of the Year, 46 Horizon League First-Teamers, 35 Second-Teamers, and 42 conference all-newcomer team honorees.
Moynihan was on the coaching staff at Milwaukee for 19 years, first serving as an assistant coach under his sister Susan for four years. In 1997, he took over as head coach, building on the foundation laid by both his sister Susan and his mother Laura, who also served as head coach at Milwaukee.
In 2011, Moynihan led Milwaukee to a 19-3 record, reaching No. 10 in the NSCAA National Rankings, the highest in program history. The Panthers went a perfect 8-0 in Horizon League play, winning their 12th consecutive Horizon League title. After winning the Horizon League Tournament, Milwaukee hosted an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in program history, and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament victory, defeating Illinois State 3-0.
He departed Milwaukee in 2011 to take the head coaching role at Northwestern, where he's gone 104-84-29 over the past eleven seasons, earning a Big Ten Championship in 2016. His teams have appeared in five NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the Second Round four times, including this past Saturday.
Moynihan was unable to attend this past Saturday's induction as he was coaching the Wildcats to a 3-0 victory in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Next up, he will try to lead the Wildcats to the Sweet 16 for the second time in his career on Friday, November 14, when Northwestern travels to Los Angeles to take on Vanderbilt in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
