Northwestern Fencing is Perfect at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Northwestern fencing team swept its eight meets at the Vassar Invitational, highlighted by a win over No. 6 Cornell.
The team started the day with a victory over Johns Hopkins. The sabre and foil squads secured the win with 8-1 and 7-2 victories respectively. Epee fought a close round, ultimately falling 4-5 to the Blue Jays.
Next up, the 'Cats squared off against No. Big Red and came away with a 15-12 victory. The foil and sabre squads led the way with 6-3 and 5-4 victories, respectively. The epee squad fell 4-5.
In the third round, the 'Cats had their biggest victory of the day by margin of victory, defeating Hunter, 25-2. All three squads beat the Hawks, with the epee and foil squads going a perfect 9-0 and sabre contributing seven wins to the team total.
In their fourth match of the day, the 'Cats took out Wagner 23-4 behind wins from all three squads. Foil once again went a perfect 9-0 in the round with epee and sabre each winning 7-2.
After a break in competition during the middle of the day, the Wildcats picked up right where they left off by avenging their 2021-22 season loss to Tufts with a 17-10 victory. The epee squad won seven bouts, sabre won six, and foil contributed four victories to the team's total.
Against their sixth opponent of the day, the 'Cats beat Stevens 21-6 with victories across all three weapons. Epee led the way with an 8-1 victory, foil won 7-2, and sabre 6-3.
In the penultimate match, the 'Cats took out Wellesley 18-9 behind 7-2 victories by the foil and sabre squads.
To wrap up the day, the 'Cats secured the sweep by beating Long Island 17-10. All three squads came away with victories against the Sharks. Foil and sabre each won 6-3 while the epee squad won 5-4.
Next up, the 'Cats head to the Elite Invitational at Penn on November 19.
