EVANSTON, Ill. –– Northwestern women's soccer will make its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and fifth since 2015 when it hosts SIUE at Martin Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.  The Wildcats enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 14-4-2, including a 7-2-1 mark in Big Ten play. The 'Cats were seeded second in the Big Ten Tournament, earning a home contest in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals against 2021 Big Ten Champion Rutgers. After falling behind early, Rowan Lapi equalized with a right-footed strike from over 25 yards out. Coming out of halftime tied at 1, the 'Cats seized the lead on a goal from Nicole Doucette, the first of her career. Doucette's goal stood up as the game-winner, giving Northwestern a berth in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals at Lower.com Field in Columbus. In Columbus, the Wildcats fell 2-0 to eventual Big Ten Tournament Champion Penn State. On Monday, Northwestern heard its name called during the NCAA Selection Show for the first time since 2018, placing them as a 4 seed, the highest seed in program history.

'Cat Facts

  • The 'Cats are ranked 17th in the NCAA RPI entering the Big Dance
  • NU's 4-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament is the highest seed in program history
  • Eight Wildcats were named All-Big Ten, the most of any school this season and the most in program history.
  • From August to October, NU rattled off 13 consecutive games unbeaten, the most in program history
  • Seven wins in conference play ties a program-record, set in 2016 and 2017

  • Two more wins would tie Northwestern's program record of 16 wins and would earn a berth in the Sweet 16, the farthest Northwestern has ever advanced
SIUE enters the NCAA Tournament having won four in a row, including two wins in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid. The Cougars limped through the non-conference schedule before posting a 5-1-2 record in the Ohio Valley, earning the conference's two seed in the OVC Tournament. In the Semifinal, the Cougars defeated Morehead State 2-0 behind second half goals from Mary Wessel and Maria Haro. Sidney Christopher scored the lone goal in the OVC Tournament Final to give SIUE a 1-0 victory over OVC Regular Season Champion Tennessee Tech and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. SIUE presents a balanced attack, with ten goalscorers and four goalscorers with at least three goals apiece. Taylor Spiller handles goalkeeping duties, playing every minute so far this season and posting a 1.18 goals against average and a .775 save percentage.

SIUE and Northwestern have met twice before in program history, with NU taking both matchups. In 2016, the two sides met in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, with the 'Cats squeaking out a 1-0 victory. Earlier this season, the 'Cats came away with a 5-0 victory in their home opener at Martin Stadium, behind two goals and an assist from Josie Aulicino.

The winner of Saturday's matchup at Martin Stadium will advance to the second round to face the winner of 5-seed Clemson and Vanderbilt on Friday, November 18 at a campus site to be determined.
