EVANSTON, Ill. – Caileigh Walsh secured a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to help the Northwestern women's basketball team take down the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 88-72 at home Tuesday in the Wildcats' lone exhibition game of the season.
The Wildcats will now look toward the regular season, with their season-opener taking place at Oregon on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5 pm CT.
In addition to Walsh's solid showing, the Wildcats (1-0) were led by Jillian Brown, who had 18 points, and by Kaylah Rainey, who added seven points, six assists and two steals.
Courtney Shaw pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.
The Northwestern defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 13 Wisconsin-Parkside turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Laya Hartman led the way individually for the Wildcats with two steals.

Early in the game, Northwestern went on a 7-0 run, culminating in a three from Brown, to take a 10-3 lead with 7:18 left in the first quarter. The Rangers battled back, but the 'Cats entered the quarter break with a 16-14 advantage. Northwestern capitalized on four Wisconsin-Parkside turnovers in that first period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
The Wildcats kept their first quarter lead intact before adding on with a 7-0 run starting at the 8:39 mark in the second period. The run was highlighted by a bucket from Walsh, and Northwestern increased its lead to 25-16. The Rangers cut into that lead, but the Wildcats still took a 35-31 advantage into halftime.
Following intermission, Northwestern continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 52-39 before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 60-39. Northwestern's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 11 of the team's 31 third-quarter points.
The 'Cats fired away from deep in the fourth quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points. That performance expanded their margin, and they coasted the rest of the way to a 88-72 win.
