'Cats Shatter Record of Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

EVANSTON, Ill. – A school-record 142 Northwestern student-athletes earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the conference announced on Thursday morning.
 
All 19 varsity programs had at least one recipient of the honor for the third time ever and the third straight year. The Wildcats set the previous school record with 121 Distinguished Scholars in 2020-21.
 
Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career. Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program.
 
Football (19), Men's Basketball (1) Men's Golf (3), Men's Soccer (8), Softball (8), Women's Basketball (3), Fencing (15), Women's Golf (8), Lacrosse (16) Women's Tennis (5) and Wrestling (5) led their respective Big Ten sport or shared the lead in Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, with Women's Basketball and Fencing doing it for the second year in a row.
