EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern eclipsed 20 goals for the second time this year and never trailed as it downed Ohio State 22-14 in the Big Ten Conference opener at Ryan Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Lauren Gilbert powered the offense with a game-high five goals and leads the No. 5 ranked Wildcats with 31 on the season.

NU (6-2, 1-0 B1G) went on a 10-2 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to pull away from the Buckeyes (6-4, 0-1 B1G) and lead by as many as 10 in the last stanza. Erin Coykendall and Jill Girardi teamed up to score a pair of goals in just seven seconds in the third quarter.

Hannah Johnson and Samantha Smith each registered three goals for Northwestern, and Brennan Dwyer led the team with three assists. Gilbert logged a game-high seven points (5g, 2a). She scored five or more goals in a game for the fourth time this season.

Northwestern scored six goals in both first and second periods to grab a 12-7 halftime lead. Gilbert tallied three goals while Johnson and Smith added two each. The offense found its groove and went on a 5-1 scoring run over 8:16 in the second period with Smith tallying both scores in the stretch.
